What Is Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story About?#
On the edge of town lives a girl everyone calls Red Riding Hood. One day, for reasons of her own, she has to set off on a journey.
The trouble is that wherever she travels, a crime happens. Again and again she walks straight into a case. Each time, she solves it with her curiosity and her sharp mind.
The setting is the world of fairy tales everyone knows, and that's the hook. The culprits use tricks that only work in fairy tales, and Red Riding Hood sees through them.
Cast and Characters#
- Yume Miyamoto as Red Riding Hood, a girl who gets caught up in a case every time she travels
- Akira Sekine as Pinocchio, a wooden puppet boy from a circus troupe, moved by a mysterious power
- Takuya Sato as Jill, a traveler who studies lies and enjoys watching Red Riding Hood work
- Atsushi Tamaru as Antonio
- Motoko Kumai as Rodrigo
- Kotaro Nishiyama as Paolo
- Sakiko Uran as Thumbelina
- Ryoko Shiraishi as the narrator
Miyamoto and Sekine were announced earlier. The other six joined on October 5. Kumai's comment sums up the tone: the art looks sweet and cozy, but the title does say she meets a corpse.
Who Is Making the Anime?#
- Original work: Aito Aoyagi
- Director, scripts and sound director: Itsuro Kawasaki
- Character design: Manami Minakata and Yuko Yahiro
- Music: Jun Ichikawa
- Animation production: Benten Film
Kawasaki's directing credits include Baban Baban Ban Vampire and Cardfight!! Vanguard. Kawasaki says adapting a mystery novel into anime was a long-held wish. Explaining the tricks on screen, Kawasaki adds, has been one of the hard parts.
The anime draws on two of Aoyagi's novels: the original, and its sequel in which Red Riding Hood picks up Pinocchio.
The Novels and the Netflix Film#
Aoyagi's first novel came out from Futabasha in August 2020, and the series has passed 600,000 copies. A manga adaptation by Tanakanoka ran to four volumes.
You may already know the story. A live-action film of the same novel, starring Kanna Hashimoto, streamed worldwide on Netflix in 2023. Its English title was Once Upon a Crime.
More mysteries are on the way in 2027, including The Case Files of Biblia Bookstore in April. Also premiering in January: The Kept Man of the Princess Knight.
