The Moon on a Rainy Night airs in 2027. The TV anime, known in Japan as Amayo no Tsuki, released its first PV on October 7, 2026, along with its two lead actors and its composer. Iori Saeki and Sora Amamiya star.

It's a quiet story about two high school girls, one of whom is hard of hearing. Here's the PV, the story, the cast and the team making it.

When Does The Moon on a Rainy Night Come Out?#

The anime airs in 2027. The month, the TV network and any streaming service haven't been announced.

The 91-second PV is the first full look at the anime, and the first time jizue's score can be heard.

It also comes with closed captions in 17 languages, including English. The captions cover more than dialogue. They describe sounds and music too. You can turn them on in YouTube's subtitle settings.

What Is The Moon on a Rainy Night About?#

Just before starting high school, Saki Kindaichi is on her way to a piano lesson when she meets a striking girl with long hair, Kanon Oikawa.

On the day of the entrance ceremony, the two meet again as classmates. Kanon is hard of hearing, and perhaps because of it, she keeps her distance from everyone around her.

Saki is troubled by the biased way classmates and teachers talk about Kanon. She wants to know her, and tries to close the gap. Faced with that directness, Kanon slowly begins to open up, and to change.

The title comes from a line in the story: the moon on a rainy night is "a metaphor for something you can't see with your eyes, like a moon hidden by rain." It's still there, even when you can't see it.

Cast and Characters#

Amamiya describes Kanon as a girl who looks cool but is full of charm. Amamiya adds: "I sometimes struggle with the ways I'm different from other people too, and this felt like a story that stays by your side at times like that."

Saeki says the manga draws changes in feeling, and the distance between people, with great delicacy, and that finding how to voice that world took a lot of thought.

Makino's directing credits include Aharen-san wa Hakarenai. Yasukawa wrote Food Wars! and Rock is a Lady's Modesty, and Nishibata designed the characters for Migi & Dali.

Music by jizue#

jizue is an instrumental band from Kyoto. Its members say the challenge was how to express music in a world without sound. Because the piano matters so much in the story, the score leans heavily on piano pieces.

The Manga Behind the Anime#

Kuzushiro launched the manga on Kodansha's Comic Days site in June 2021, and 12 volumes are out in Japan. Kuzushiro is also the creator of A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace, which got its own anime in 2025.

Kodansha USA publishes the manga in English as The Moon on a Rainy Night.
