Space Battleship Yamato √2199: Hideaki Anno's New Yamato Film Is Official

Space Battleship Yamato √2199 is official. The new feature-length animated film was announced on October 6, 2026, with Hideaki Anno as director and executive producer. Yutaka Izubuchi is co-director. Production I.G and Studio Khara are animating it together, in the two studios' first co-production.

When Does Space Battleship Yamato √2199 Come Out?#

No release date or year has been given. The official site says the timing will be announced once it's decided.

The announcement landed on a meaningful date. The original Space Battleship Yamato TV series first aired on October 6, 1974, which makes this the franchise's 52nd anniversary.

The Teaser Visual#

The first image is simple and striking. The Yamato sits in silhouette on its supports above a barren, ruined landscape, ready to launch. Behind it, the Milky Way rises straight up from the horizon into a sky full of stars.

There's no trailer yet, and no cast has been announced.

Anno is best known for Neon Genesis Evangelion and Shin Godzilla. Izubuchi was chief director of Space Battleship Yamato 2199, the remake that began in 2012.

Mitsuhisa Ishikawa is the founder of Production I.G, and Anno joined that studio's board of directors in August 2025.

Anno's Lifelong Connection to Yamato#

Anno, born in 1960, has been a Yamato fan since the second year of middle school. Anno has often named the series as the spark for a lifelong interest in anime, and has worked on the franchise before, planning the opening sequence of Yamato 2199.

In a comment released with the announcement, Anno said: "I want to keep making Yamato not only to fulfill a childhood dream, but also to imbue our prayers and wishes for the next generation and our own. It is with that resolve that we produce this."

How the Project Came Together#

The project has been public for two years. In October 2024, at a 50th anniversary screening of the original series, Anno revealed that Studio Khara had been granted the right to make new Yamato animation.

That approval came from the franchise's rights holders, Voyager Holdings and Tohokushinsha Film. Anno put it plainly at the time: "Simply put, I can now make a new one." Izubuchi appeared at the same event and confirmed he was involved.

What Does √2199 Mean?#

The √ is the square root sign, and the official reading is "Root 2199." In Japanese the same word sounds like "route," so the title can be heard both ways.

The year 2199 is where it all began. In the original story, Earth is dying under attack from the planet Gamilas, its surface poisoned by radiation. The space battleship Yamato sets out for the distant planet Iscandar to bring back the device that can save the world.

The film is a different production from the current remake series, which began with Yamato 2199. That series finishes its latest chapter, Rebel 3199, in Japanese theaters on October 30. How the new film's story relates to earlier versions hasn't been explained.
