Is Dragon Ball Super: Beerus a Remake?#

Yes. Toei calls it the ENHANCED edition of the Dragon Ball Super TV anime, and its announcement lists what that means:

  • extensive new cuts and revisions to existing scenes
  • a complete re-rendering of all footage
  • newly recorded voice performances, with added score and sound effects
  • a full reconstruction of the story

The goal, in Toei's words, is more immersive battles and "a more faithful and detailed reproduction" of Akira Toriyama's original work.

The original Dragon Ball Super aired on Fuji TV from July 2015 to March 2018 and ran 131 episodes. Its opening arc retold the 2013 film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, and that is where this edition begins.

The project was announced on January 25, 2026, at the Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri event at Makuhari Messe. The event was part of the franchise's 40th anniversary.

What Is the Story?#

Several years after the battle with Majin Buu, Earth has finally found a moment of peace. Then Beerus, the God of Destruction, wakes from a long sleep. Even the Kais watch his return in fear, because he has the power to destroy entire planets.

Beerus hears a rumour about a Saiyan who defeated Frieza, and he suddenly turns up in front of Goku. With the strongest being in the universe targeting Earth, a battle begins that will shake the entire cosmos.

It won't stop at Beerus. The key art for the SUPER Surge Trailer also shows Frieza, along with new threats aimed at Earth. Frieza's return was first teased at the end of April's trailer.

The SUPER Surge Trailer opens with a Kamehameha and cuts between Goku and Beerus. Then it brings in Frieza and new enemies. It's also the first place you can hear both theme songs.

It's the third trailer for the series:

SUPER GEKITOU TrailerApril 20, 20261.5 million
SUPER Surge TrailerSeptember 3, 20263.1 million

The SUPER GEKITOU Trailer premiered at Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2026 in Los Angeles and ends with a first look at Frieza waiting to be revived.

Dragon Ball Super: Beerus Cast#

  • Masako Nozawa as Son Goku
  • Koichi Yamadera as Beerus

Both return to the roles they played in the original series. Yamadera said he was happy to see Beerus's name in the title. Nozawa said the Goku and Beerus fight in the April trailer surprised her, and pointed to its final shot of Frieza.

Series executive producer Akio Iyoku explained why the title is named after Beerus: Dragon Ball Super only gets moving because of him. The team, he said, is focused on showing Beerus's presence and appeal with the latest animation techniques.

Who Is Making It?#

  • Original work, story and character design: Akira Toriyama
  • Composition and direction arrangement: Matsuto Seya
  • Animation character design and chief animation director: Tadayoshi Yamamuro
  • Music: Norihito Sumitomo
  • Animation: Toei Animation

Toriyama, who died in March 2024, keeps his full credit for original work, story and character design. Two key staff members worked on the arc's first telling. Yamamuro was chief animation director and animation character designer on Battle of Gods. Sumitomo scored that film and the original Dragon Ball Super.

Opening and Ending Theme Songs#

The opening theme is "ONOGAMI" by Megatera Zero. He's a singer-songwriter with more than 1.6 million YouTube subscribers, and he also sang the opening for Mononogatari season 2. The title plays on "ono ga mi," one's own self. He says the song is about fighters who trust nothing but their own strength, rivals included.

The ending theme is "Kan Peki No Peki" by VK Blanka, also known as Vickeblanka. He's the singer behind "Black Catcher," the Black Clover opening. He says he put everything he had into this song. That covers the strength and courage Dragon Ball is known for, and also the sorrow and injustice that always sat in its shadows.

What Comes Next: Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol#

Beerus isn't the only Dragon Ball Super anime in the works. On the same day in January 2026, Toei announced Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol. It's a new series that picks up after the anime's Universe Survival arc.

It adapts the manga's Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc, the planet-eating sorcerer Moro's story, which the original anime never reached. No premiere date has been set. For everything else airing this autumn, see our 2026 anime hub.
