The 78-second teaser went up on KING AMUSEMENT CREATIVE's YouTube channel on September 18. It sets up the premise quickly. Kuroki's new seat is next to "the rumored jirai-kei girl," and Chihara's red eyes fill the screen.

Then the tone flips. Chihara grabs Kuroki's face, and a caption notes she seems "a little different from the rumors." The rest plays out as awkward, funny moments between two people who can't quite read each other. It closes on the tagline promising a heart-pounding school comedy.

It passed 1 million views on YouTube within eight days.

What Does "Jirai" Mean?#

Jirai is Japanese for landmine. Jirai-kei, or "landmine type," is a fashion and makeup style: pale, doll-like skin, flushed red eye makeup, strong red lips and a gloomy expression.

Seven Seas sums it up as a hyper-feminine, dark aesthetic often associated with yandere tendencies and unstable personalities. The idea is that she might blow up if you step wrong. That's the reputation Chihara carries at school, and the whole comedy is about how wrong it is.

What Is Are You a Jirai Girl, Chihara-san? About?#

It's the first day of a new school year. After the class reshuffle, Kuroki, a plain second-year boy, finds himself seated next to Mai Chihara. Everything about her screams jirai, and the rumors say she's dangerous.

Up close, though, she doesn't match the rumors. Her words and actions are impossible to predict, and Kuroki spends most of his time off balance. As he sees more of her, his picture of her keeps changing.

She turns out to be a bit of an airhead and surprisingly clumsy. She loves cats. And somehow, she's a charismatic figure among gyoza fans.

Chihara-san Cast#

• Sayumi Suzushiro as Mai Chihara, the girl with the jirai look
• Kazuki Ura as Kuroki, the plain boy in the next seat
• Maaya Uchida as Chinatsu Iwakura, Chihara's closest friend
• Tomokazu Sugita as Hibiya, Kuroki's friend since nursery school
• Daisuke Ono as Kazami, another of Kuroki's friends since nursery school

Suzushiro and Ura already played Chihara and Kuroki in the manga's voice comic and earlier promotional video, and both kept their roles for the TV anime.
